Malaria: the parasite and the transmission to humans

If you want information about malaria before you go on a trip, read “Information for travellers”, one of the sections of www.impact-malaria.com.

It is important to know how malaria is transmitted to humans. While malaria can be lethal, it can also be avoided through simple measures.

Species of plasmodium

Plasmodia are microscopic parasites that cause malaria. Four species of the parasite can produce the disease in humans: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium malariae.

The plasmodium is transmitted by female anopheles bites

Only the female of Anopheles transmits the Plasmodium falciparum, by biting humans.

To learn about the life-cycle of malaria, consult the section entitled Parasites and transmission of the disease.
